About us and our town

Felsőzsolca, which became a town in 1997, is situated in the most various part of Hungary, in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. It is surrounded by the magnificent volcanic hills of Zemplén, the unparalleled karstic Bükk hills, the slopes of Cserhát become gentle here, and from the south it is framed by the endless Alföld. It can be found in the intersection of three rivers, the Bódva, Sajó and the Hernád, 4 kilometres from Miskolc. The first written source about the settlement was completed in 1280, but in different excavations a lot of other sources confirmed that people had already lived here centuries before the Settlement of the Magyars in Hungary.

The first public library was established between the two World Wars with only about a hundred volumes in a room of the Roman Catholic School. During the war the library was perished, but later, in 1949, it continued its function with the help of some enthusiastic readers from the village. After some suitable or unsuitable seats, finally the library got home in the Bárczai Palace. The Neoclassical Palace was built in the 19th century and it is the home of the Town Library since 2001. Now it is an essential place of the culture and art in our town. It offers not just library but permanent exhibition about the history of our town, regular temporary exhibitions, concerts, literary and social programs.

The Town Library opened its door ahead of its clients with new, recovered and beautiful palace-like rooms in 03.23.2002. It has three parts (adult book-renter; kid and teenage room; Readers’ room) in 173 m² with modern and exquisite furniture which welcomes the readers and people who simply use the building’s services. The Readers’ room gives the impression of being spacious, calm and sophisticated. It is a perfect place to turn some books’ pages for some research or use the informatican equipment to surf on the internet.

The Library has about 30.000 documents which are mainly books, but from 1999 we have been gathering more and more volumes, many videos/sounds and even CD-ROMs. In 2001, we won a competition within the ,,Széchenyi-project” of which we used for developing our computer-system what based the construction of Network in our building. In 2010, we also won two competitions. With that money of the European-Union, firstly we changed the out-dated computers, after we began to organize exciting, lively programmes to the population of Felsőzsolca.

In 2001, The Government of Felsőzsolca put the cultural and educational institutions into another organization, named <Általános Művelődési Központ> , in the hope of more efficient functioning.
